Originally located on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, the VA Medical Center, New Orleans, LA is a thriving part of the fabric of today's Crescent City. From a small Army hospital in the suburbs, today's VA Medical Center has evolved into a renowned center for state-of-the-art outpatient and inpatient services for a diverse 25-parish region, delivering primary, secondary and tertiary care to over 222,000 veterans throughout Southeast Louisiana. Housed in the heart of the New Orleans Central Business District, the Medical Center is a 450 bed acute care facility, offering health care in medicine, surgery, psychiatry and rehabilitative medicine and supports the 120-bed Boggs Transitional Care Unit which provides extensive inpatient rehabilitation therapy. An active ambulatory care program supports over 270,000 outpatient visits annually in various medical, surgical and psychiatric sub-specialties. It provides a number of innovative clinical services, such as cardiac surgery, geriatric and extended care, women veteran services, hemodialysis, spinal cord injury, coronary intensive care and care for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The facility also operates a satellite clinic in Baton Rouge, the state's capital, which is located some 80 miles from New Orleans.

Teaching and research are central to the Medical Center's mission. Through its long standing partnership with both Louisiana State University in New Orleans and Tulane University Schools of Medicine, and many allied health profession programs, the Medical Center is a primary teaching facility, providing training to over 450 medical residents annually in over 20 specialties and to nearly 900 associate health trainees.

Ranked as a leader in research, the Medical Center's research program supports over 150 active projects in such diverse areas as hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease, prostate cancer, schizophrenia, PTSD and Alzheimer's Disease. Medical Center research staff includes world-renown Dr. Andrew V. Schally, a Nobel Prize winner in Medicine and Physiology and recipient of the prestigious Middleton Award, the highest award VA offers for research accomplishment.

With over 1,700 health care professionals, 600-plus regularly scheduled volunteers, and an annual operating budget of $130 million, the VA Medical Center, New Orleans is committed to delivering the highest quality of patient care to our Nation's veterans.
